YOKOHAMA, KANAGAWA

One Perfect Day in Yokohama

Yokohama waterfront skyline and Cosmo Clock 21 glowing beneath a dramatic blue-hour sky
Stay for this moment: when the harbour darkens and Minato Mirai switches on.

I would start a day in Yokohama among Chinatown's gates and side streets, then make my way towards Minato Mirai as the lights come on. The city has a completely different feel after dark, so I would avoid making the waterfront an afterthought.

01

Begin with the colour and flavour of Chinatown

In Chinatown, I photographed decorative gates and lantern-filled lanes before turning the story towards the waterfront. I would start the suggested day at Motomachi-Chukagai and leave room for several small food stops. The side streets and architecture deserve attention between bites too.

Arrive before the main lunch rush if you want calmer photographs and shorter queues. Menus and opening hours change, so check current information before travelling for one specific shop.

02

Let Marine Tower lead you to the water

I photographed Marine Tower from below, where its lattice structure stands clearly against the sky. From Chinatown, I would use it as the next point on the walk towards Yamashita Park. Going up is an optional addition; check the current tickets and visibility before deciding.

03

Slow down beside the sea at Yamashita Park

At Yamashita Park, I had room to frame Hikawa Maru against the harbour. The ship gave the waterfront walk a connection to Yokohama's maritime history. I would pause here before continuing into the historic port district, rather than hurry straight to Minato Mirai.

The ship can be visited during its museum hours, but its illuminated exterior is memorable even after the galleries close. The mood becomes especially cinematic around dusk.

04

Look up in Yokohama’s historic port district

My night photographs turn towards the domes, towers and illuminated façades around the historic port district. I would keep looking above street level on the way from Yamashita Park towards the Red Brick Warehouse. The architecture is part of the route, not just the space between landmarks.

05

Pause at the Red Brick Warehouse

I photographed the Red Brick Warehouse after dark, when warm lighting brought out the brickwork. For the suggested route, I would leave time for the outside as well as the shops or a meal inside. Check the current event calendar if a particular market or exhibition is part of your plan.

Events can change the atmosphere considerably. Check the official calendar if a seasonal market or exhibition is important to your visit.

06

Watch old Yokohama turn into Minato Mirai

My photographs move from red brick to public art, towers and the Ferris wheel as the route reaches Minato Mirai. I would keep that transition in one waterfront walk where energy and weather allow. It shows how different eras of Yokohama sit close together.

07

Do not leave before Yokohama lights up

I kept both daylight and night photographs of Cosmo Clock 21 because the skyline changes so much once it lights up. I would save this part of the route for the evening. A ride is one option, but I could also frame the wheel and its reflections from the waterfront.

I would check the return train before settling into the evening, then leave time for the lights instead of departing straight after dinner. If the walk has been long enough, Minatomirai or Sakuragicho gives the route a practical finish.
