NAKIJIN, OKINAWA

Nakijin Castle
Ruins

The official marker sets the scene: this is one of the Ryukyu Kingdom’s World Heritage sites.

I came to Nakijin for Ryukyu history and found a visit shaped by stone paths, curving walls and open views. I would give it more time than a quick stop between the coast and lunch.

01

Walk into Ryukyu history

My approach to Nakijin followed stone paths and trees before the larger walls came into view. The former Hokuzan stronghold reveals its scale gradually. I would keep time for the approach itself, rather than save all the attention for the highest viewpoint.

02

The walls are the main event

I photographed the rough limestone blocks close up and the walls stretching across the green landscape. The change of scale is part of the walk. I would look back along the path as well as ahead; the dry-stone ramparts create different lines from each angle.

03

Before you go

Wear shoes that handle uneven stone and steps. The exposed areas can feel hot, while shaded sections may stay damp after rain. Current hours and admission can change, so check the official site before setting out.

GETTING THERE

From Hilton Sesoko

Hilton describes Nakijin Castle as about a 20-minute drive from the resort. Driving is the simplest option; without a car, ask the hotel to help confirm taxi availability and return transport.
