STAY FILE 05
UMEKITA, OSAKA
Waldorf Astoria Osaka

I spent this Osaka birthday between a room overlooking the city, a table at Jolie and quieter pauses by the pool and in the Library. The skyline was memorable, but it was the combination of the room, dinner and quieter hours at the hotel that made this a birthday trip rather than just another night in Osaka.

A perfect luxury hotel, but without a lounge. Maybe it's just me, but a lounge matters for city-center stays — it's an oasis from a chaotic city.

01
A room with Osaka in the windows
From my bed, the windows brought layers of Osaka's buildings and the river into view. Pale wood and soft curtains framed the city without competing with it. If that outlook is the reason for a stay, I would check the exact view category before booking.
If you are paying extra for the view, make sure the room category actually promises the outlook you want. Our room looked over Osaka, but the same panorama should not be assumed for every booking.

02
The birthday comes back to the room
My birthday table in the room had strawberries, wine and a handwritten card. The celebration was not confined to the dinner reservation; it was waiting upstairs too. For a similar occasion, I would ask the hotel about arrangements and charges in advance.
Planning a celebration here? Ask the hotel about cake, flowers or a message before your visit, and confirm any charges. These were part of our birthday arrangements, rather than an inclusion to assume with every reservation.

03
Pool time above the city
I made room for the pool and a pause on a lounger, with Osaka's towers still visible through the glass. This is hotel time that would disappear in a full sightseeing schedule. I would leave a gap in the day for it rather than count only the hours spent outside.
The hotel lists the pool on the 30th floor. Check the latest opening hours and any family-use rules before planning your swim.

04
A birthday dinner at Jolie Brasserie
At Jolie, my dinner began with a carefully arranged starter and onion soup beneath melted cheese. Pale wood, gold-edged plates and the windows set the scene. I would treat this as the evening's main plan, not a meal to fit between two outings.

Fish, meat and a change of colour
My fish course came with a mussel, toast and orange-coloured broth; the meat course followed with darker sauce and vegetables. I kept a photograph of each plate, but I would also leave time between courses to enjoy the room and the city beyond it.

Save a little room for the soufflé
I finished the birthday dinner with a tall soufflé, a dusting of sugar and ice cream on the side. Tea was on the table and Osaka was lit beyond the glass. Dessert gave me one more reason to stay at the table instead of ending the evening quickly.
Jolie is the hotel’s French brasserie on the 29th floor. These dishes are from our visit; use the current menu when booking, and mention a birthday or dietary requirements in advance.

05
The same windows, a brighter morning
My breakfast photographs return to the same hotel in a different light: a bowl with small dishes at one sitting, eggs, vegetables and coffee at another. I would check which breakfast option a room rate includes, then give the morning enough time to enjoy it.
Give breakfast a proper place in the morning instead of fitting it around a rushed departure. When comparing room rates, check whether breakfast is included and what the booked breakfast option covers.

06
A book, a window seat and one more view
Between meals and the pool, I sat with a book about Japanese castles in the Library. Wooden shelves and comfortable chairs made room for a quieter part of the stay. The window was a competing attraction: a few pages, then another look at Osaka.

Osaka after dark
Later, I had a glass of wine by the window as the buildings turned into patterns of light. The swim, reading and birthday dinner gave the city view different settings throughout the stay. I would book enough time to enjoy those smaller moments too.
