TAKAGAMINE, KYOTO

TENJIN
at ROKU KYOTO

One of many meals at TENJIN, with daylight and greenery at the table.

I have returned to TENJIN for daylight lunches, evening courses, pasta and a birthday celebration. This is my dining diary across those visits, with a different reason to sit down each time.

01

The same table, a different mood

TENJIN is a restaurant I have returned to for several different occasions: a relaxed lunch, an evening meal and a birthday celebration. I like how the setting changes between daylight and dinner. These are memories from different visits, not a single tasting menu, and the dishes may have changed since then.

Tall windows bring the terrace and trees into view, while pale timber and dark frames give the room a clear, contemporary character. In the evening, candlelight changes the focus from the landscape to the people and plates at the table.

02

Opening plates that reward a closer look

Across my visits, the starters arrived on sculpted glass or broad ceramic plates, with small colourful elements arranged around the main ingredients. I noticed the tableware as well as the food. The opening of one meal could look quite different from the next.

Across the visits, the visual appeal comes from the combination of food and tableware: pale sauces, bright greens, rounded shapes and little contrasts in colour. These are plates that invite a moment of attention before the first bite.

Fish, meat and the finishing touches

My main-course photographs move between a golden-topped fish dish on pale ceramics and seared meat against a darker plate. I keep them together as a record of separate meals, not as a single course to order. The fish, cut and accompaniments depend on the menu for each visit.

A tableside sauce pour from the dining collection adds a small piece of theatre. It is a useful glimpse of the meal in motion alongside the still photographs. The exact fish, cut of meat and accompaniments depend on the menu served on each occasion.

There is room for a bowl of pasta, too

I have also sat down to seafood pasta in red sauce and broad ribbons of pasta beneath grated cheese. Those meals give my TENJIN story a more everyday side. A return visit does not need a birthday or a full course dinner to have a place in the diary.

With a bowl in front of me and a fork in hand, I can let the more formal side of the hotel recede for a while. These meals sit alongside the celebrations in my travel diary, rather than underneath them.

Desserts with a personal note

One visit ended with a birthday plate bearing my name; others brought chocolate, fruit, ice cream or a tall glass dessert. Those different endings are why I have kept the visits separate in this diary. If I were planning another celebration, I would arrange the details with the restaurant in advance.

The birthday photograph records my celebration, rather than a standard inclusion with every meal. If you are planning your own celebration, ask the restaurant in advance about available arrangements and any additional charge.
