Café TEF, Tanigumi: The Café I Keep Coming Back To

Spring blossoms are one of the reasons I keep returning to Café TEF in Tanigumi.

Some places become favourites one visit at a time. For me, Café TEF in Tanigumi, Gifu, is one of them: breakfast, lunch, a warm welcome and nature just beyond the windows. I especially love coming here in spring and winter.

The setting is the reason to linger

I keep returning for the nature around Café TEF. Part of TEF TANIGUMI in Ibigawa, it is a place where the surroundings belong to the experience as much as the meal. Spring brings blossoms into the picture; winter is another season I particularly love here. With a warm drink in front of me and trees beyond the glass, a café visit becomes an outing in its own right.

A welcome that brings me back

The people are another reason this place has become a favourite. The staff I have met are kind and welcoming, and some speak English. For visitors who are less confident in Japanese, that can make settling in easier. English-speaking staff may not be on every shift, but the warmth of my visits is what stays with me. You can use the café without staying at TEF TANIGUMI.

Breakfast, with time to enjoy it

My breakfast photographs capture a different side of the café from the lunch visits. On this occasion, my plate held thick toast, a sausage, a colourful salad, fruit and yogurt, and a small baked side, with a hot drink alongside. It is a generous spread to sit down to before continuing the day. These are meals from different visits; the current menu may have changed.

Colour arrives at lunchtime

My lunches have included a pale-purple soup with salad and, on another tray, a hamburg steak with vegetables, rice and a side dish. Red and yellow peppers, aubergine and greens make the plates lively against the dark ceramics. Looking through my photographs, the variety of vegetables stands out. I would make lunch the centre of a visit rather than squeeze it into a hurried stop.

Different visits, different lunches

One of my curry lunches came with rice in the centre, vegetables around it and half an egg. Another meal arrived with rice served separately beside a lemon-topped main. They are two separate orders, each part of my growing collection of visits here. I would check the day's menu before choosing; these photographs are memories of what I ate, rather than a promise of what will be available next time.

A sweet finish to the visit

My dessert photographs tell their own little story: chocolate cake with strawberries and cream beside black coffee, then a different cake with fruit, cream and ice cream on another visit. The careful plating gives each sweet its moment. Alongside the breakfasts and lunches, these are the details that have accumulated as I keep coming back to the same familiar café.

How I would plan a visit

I would choose breakfast or lunch first, then plan the journey around it. The official café page lists breakfast at 9:00–11:30, last orders 11:00, and lunch at 11:30–15:00, last orders 14:00. Some lunch reservations are accepted by phone for 11:30 or 13:00. The café and access pages give different afternoon closing times, so I would call before a late visit. Check the official links below for current menus and hours. Details checked on 19 September 2026.

Taka’s Take

I come back for the combination: nature, breakfast or lunch, and people who make me feel welcome. Spring and winter are my favourite seasons here. For me, Café TEF is a reason to head to Tanigumi, especially when I want the café itself to be part of the destination.

Getting there

Café TEF: 427-2 Tanigumi Nagase, Ibigawa, Gifu 501-1303. Tel. 0585-77-5090. From Gifu, I would travel via Ogaki and take the Tarumi Railway to Tanigumiguchi. The official guide estimates about 40 minutes from Ogaki, followed by a 15-minute walk from Tanigumiguchi Station. By car, allow approximately 13 minutes from Motosu IC or 20 minutes from Ono-Godo IC; parking is available. I would check return trains in advance and road conditions in winter. The maps below show the drive from Gifu Station and the walk from Tanigumiguchi.
