KUNIGAMI, OKINAWA

Cape Hedo

My northern-Okinawa journey reached Cape Hedo, where limestone, reef and open sea replace the resort shoreline. I would give the drive and the return their own space in the day.

01

Where two seas meet the horizon

At Cape Hedo, I photographed pale reef below hard limestone and an open horizon beyond. Okinawa's northern tip brings views towards the Pacific and East China Sea into the same visit. I would come for the landscape as a whole, rather than one monument or photo point.

02

Markers at the end of the road

I also photographed the Japan Trail marker and the white Yoron–Kunigami friendship monument. They give this northern stop connections beyond the cape itself. After those details, I would return my attention to the coast and leave enough daylight for the journey back.

03

Do not rush the return

I would not add Cape Hedo at the end of an already full sightseeing day. A rental car or organised tour is the practical choice for most visitors; the bus journey requires careful connection planning. Bring water, allow for sun and wind, and stay behind the barriers by the cliff edge.

GETTING THERE

The far-north drive

Driving is the simplest way to reach the cape and combine it with the rest of northern Okinawa. If you do not drive, compare an organised day tour with the limited multi-bus route before committing.
